Jesus often went out into the wilderness among the wild animals!
“He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.” [Mark 1:13]
Why?
Could it be the natural musical symphony and visual music of those surroundings?
John was a man of the wilderness – dressed in camels skin with honey and locusts his food. He too was among the wild animals. At that time this would include lions, leopards, bears, jackals, foxes and all kinds of antelope. This was before man had driven most of these creatures into extinction in the Near East.” – [Rev. Francesco d’Assisi in Rags before the Pope

Francesco gave up his worldly possessions and comfortable life as the son of a wealthy merchant. He chose to live a humble life in charity and rags, giving and living amongst the poorest of the poor and the lepers. One by one his friends also gave up their worldly lives and followed in his footsteps. They were met with much opposition from the local bishop, as the towns folk started going to Francesco’s tiny church instead of theirs. The bishop’s jealousy turned into rage and he had one of them murdered. So Francesco took a journey from Assisi to Rome to see what the pope had to say. He couldn’t get an appointment with the pope till one of his rich friends from Assisi put in a word for him, with the condition that Francesco would read a scripted speech proper for a pope. Francesco reluctantly agreed. This 2-part scene shows Francesco starting the speech but his convictions keep him from finishing the empty speech, and so he goes it on his own using only scripture. The scriptures insult the pompous religious leaders. After which, a scene unfolds similar to the religious leaders in Jesus’ day, but with a very surprising ending. I am not Catholic, but share Francesco’s joy in God’s gift, the grace to hear and join in praise of God with His beloved creatures. And the Italian language is one of the most beautiful languages in the world.

Keep your treasurers in Heaven
Francesco (aka Francis) did not try to abolish poverty, he tried to make it holy. When his friars met someone poorer than they, they would eagerly rip off the sleeve of their habit to give to the person. They worked for all necessities and only begged if they had to. But Francis would not let them accept any money. He told them to treat coins as if they were pebbles in the road. When the bishop showed horror at the friars’ hard life, Francis said,
“If we had any possessions we should need weapons and laws to defend them.”
Francis reasoned,
what could you do to a man who owns nothing?
You can’t starve a fasting man,
you can’t steal from someone who has no money,
you can’t ruin someone who hates prestige.
They were truly free.

The beginning of the 13th century, the town of Assisi in Italian Umbria. The son of a rich merchant, Francesco Bernardone, comes back ill from war. In his delirium, he goes back in his memories to the days when he spent time on parties and carnal pleasures. Yet, the shadow of the cross that he sees in fever brings an end to his old life. The armor which he calls “my death mask” appears to be his final clothing of the old human. He slowly recovers but after the illness there is not the Francesco that was known to everybody any longer. Instead of spending hours in taverns, he spends them on meadows, instead of drinking, he meditates the beauty of God’s creatures. Once, he encounters a ruined little church. There, from the old cross, Christ changes his life forever. Francesco renounces the riches, his family and starts to rebuild the Church as “il Poverello – the poorest of the poor.” Soon, he gathers many people who are willingly built into a powerful new Spiritual Temple. Will the kingly pope accept a new order of beggars and the poorest of the poor? Will the shining gold accept the inner treasure?
